To answer your question about a computer fan, they are all 12 volt. So you will need a 12VDC (or less) power source that is rated to the amps (or more) of the fan. So if your fan is 0.3 amps, the power supply has to be 0.3 amps or more. I originally had a five computer fan setup on my tank...

I’d get rid of that heater in the five gallon bucket. The float switch will add very small quantities (when needed), with very little impact on total tank temperature. The problem is going to be when the water level drops too low in that bucket and blows an overheated heater.

Mike, my guess is bulbs, and if you were closer, I’d have the bulbs to check it out. Find someone in your neck of the woods that has some extra bulbs hanging around to check out the situation.
