I agree about going through the bottom….and that wouldn’t be a problem for me since the skimmer sits up about six inches or so: I think the bubble plate would be easily supported and the only thing you’d have to do is cover up the hole in the side. However, it’s now working and I’m not...

With the external skimmer now gone, I tackled the spaghetti-like mess of wires on that side of the tank. For the past two years, whenever anything new was added, it was simply plugged in and left on the table or floor to the left of the tank. I didn’t take a “before” picture, but believe me...

    Vinegar Dosing

OK, now I’m onboard on what you’re doing. You are producing a calcium acetate by allow acetic acid to sit around with calcium carbonate. The only concern I would have, as a means to maintain calcium levels while “feeding” acetate to bacteria, are the impurities that may be present in the...

    Vinegar Dosing

First off jsciarrino, welcome! I’m not sure what you mean by “calcium sand.” Although calcium could be present in some sands, the primary ingredient in sand is silica. However, hopefully you have considerable free calcium present in your tank water from the salt you use, dosing limewater or...

    300 Gallon upgrade

Rich, I’m also all black and I look at it this way; The plain black woodworking doesn’t distract from the main focal point….the fish tank. You don’t want adornments that distract from looking in the tank. Here’s an example….What are you looking at?….most likely not the tank. I know...

Very nice! And I’m assuming this is the Williamsport of Little League fame? I’d be curious on how they maintain the tanks over the summer break.

George, it’s kicking skimmate like crazy…..fingers still crossed. That mod to a Bubble Magus was pretty neat. It basically involved putting a bulkhead in the hole of the skimmer body and putting the pump outside the skimmer. What concerns me (with doing this to an SWC) is the torque on...

The SWC 160 calls for 7 – 10 inches of water. I actually measured and marked the side of the skimmer….and it’s in 9 inches of water. The non-cone SWC 160 came with a Sicce PSK 2500 pump while the cone version comes with an Atman 2500. No other pump fits in the cone 160….just the Atman...

    Conservation of Energy

It is a pump problem and that pump is now gone….see THIS, Post #90 The skimmer is now working just fine in nine inches of water with yet another pump, where the impeller has three washers on the impeller side.

Maybe I wasn’t clear. The pump that only worked in five or so inches of water is toast. I tried all three impellers, various combinations of washers, etc, and no go. It also had a hot iron smell when I’d pull it out of the water, after trying to get it to work. Of the three pumps I got...

Mike, you’re too kind. I’m in Sayreville and I’m hoping I finally got this thing figured out. Thank you AO for chiming in as well. Your response got me back to playing with this thing and hopefully finding one of the three Atman pumps that works. When trying your suggestion of lifting the...

George, thanks for the perseverance in attempting to find a solution. I’m going to cross my fingers and say that I just might have one pump that might be working……for the last three hours anyway….and that’s a record. I started getting ready to put the MRC back on line when I found the MAG 24...

    My 75gl sps dream

Make sure you use Randy’s newer Mg recipe. The old one produces a bunch of precipitate. "Using both Epsom salts and MAG flake, dissolve 7¼ cups MAG flake and ¾ cup Epsom salts in one gallon of water……….dissolve each separately in some freshwater before combining them."

Keep your distance today…..I’m not having a good day. I just opened up the MAG 24 to give it a cleaning, and the impeller is shot! Of the six fins, one is totally missing, and four are being held on by a thread of rubber. Only one impeller blade is fully attached. Don’t know how this...
