Depends on what you are running in it. Different medias will require different volumes of media. Check which one you are going to use and roughly how much you will need. BRS has a nifty calculator on their site to help you figure it out.

I would avoid the chocolate chip star, as you stated they are not reef safe and no one really knows what they eat. They are mainly brought in as food not really as a pet per say.
