Thanks for your previous effort Jim, I saw a few things besides leaching that could contribute to the algae. This was a nicely controlled experiment. More likely the algae is there due to change in water flow or light being reflected.

Same amount of rock or less? I like the second variation better for sure, and if same volume of rock nicely done.

Should be bacteria that helps the sand clump together...no reason not to that I know of.

Good to see you back, your tank was one of the ones that prompted me to upgrade way back when. PS which is why it is good to go pick up stuff at people's houses because you get to see their setup, find motivation, and make friends. Especially if they are as nice as Sam.
