For me, good lighting, good water movement, good skimmer, partial water changes, and a calcium reactor. I try to keep my alkalinity close to 11dkh.

Go back to the top of thread and read what the thread subject is. It was not "Stores that I do not like because they sell a fish that I think they should not sell". By the way, did they tell you that it wasn't wild caught and sold it as such? Then you could be pissed, but then again it still has...
That is not a true statement. I like both stores and have no affiliation with either, but if you have any knowledge of corals or fish, get in a conversation with either of the two people at the "store on 35" and report back on the forum your true assessment. I like Will at AO, but don't' make...
If it is fish only, then he doesn't have to supplement Ca and Alk. If it is a reef tank he absolutely has to. The corals and coralline algae use up the Ca and Alk. This is fact.
Ken
Is it a reef tank? What is in it? You need to add calcium and alkalinity to your tank be it a two part solution, or a calcium reactor, or kalkwasser.
Ken
What is in the tank.... sps, lps etc?
Why do you think the nitrate has been so high? Overfeeding, do you use tap water for top off and water changes, do you use bioballs, etc?
Ken
Get an alkalinity test kit. This is more telling than mg. Test the alk and ca in the fresh made up bucket as well as the tank. What is the nitrate level now? By the way, how do the tank inhabitants look?
Ken
I was thinking that you were doing water changes there instead of the tank. A wet vac for the crap at the bottom of the sump is a great idea. Now I'm going to do that.
