    Water changes in my sump

OK, I'll be the first to ask. Why are you doing water changes in your sump? You could put a powerhead on the tubing and pump out of your sump. You could put a bulkhead at the lower part of the sump with a gate valve and tubing and collect the water that way. Ken

    New tank 1st cyano outbreak

Don't confuse rate of return from the tank to the sump to water movement inside your tank with powerheads. Do you have cyno all over or only specific parts of the tank. If it is in a specific part, re-direct water flow to that area. Ken

How much flow do you have in the tank. The cyno can also be due to not enough water movement. Ken

    Harlequin Tusk

Does anyone have one of these fish in their reef tank? How are they? I read that cleaner shrimp etc would be on their diet, but also heard that if the shrimp are in the tank first that it would work. Any comments from people that have done it? Thanks, Ken

Should I go with IceCap T5 retro or standard ballast?

I am setting up a second tank (70 Gallon Oceanic) which is 36x18X24. I decided to go with a wood canopy as well. I am going to do a 6 bulb retrofit using Ice cap reflectors. Should I use an Ice Cap 660 ballast and overdrive the bulbs or go with a standard T5 ballast and have the bulbs run at the...

Can I add Marco rock to an established tank?

I figured the rock was inert. Guess not. i was looking to put about 10-20 lbs of the rock in with the 70 or so ponds that I have now. Would it be a better idea then to find the rock I need from someone that is selling cured rock from their system that they are looking to sell? Ken

Can I add Marco rock to an established tank?

I am changing tanks in a week or so and during the move I wanted to take out a couple of pieces of rock that I do not like and switch them with better shaped rocks. Since the reef tank has been setup for a long time and I am just supplementing rock, I was thinking of just adding dry rock. Can...

    Coralline algae scraper

Does anyone know of a good method of scraping coralline algae off the glass without having to get your hand in the tank? I decided to finally clean the front and sides of my 90 gal sps tank yesterday, and my hands were breaking off some of the corals. Even the Kent scrapers with long handles are...

    High Alkalinity

Reef Crystals have an alkalinity of around 11-12 dkh. There is nothing wrong with having your alk at 12 dkh. I try to keep my alk between 11-dkh. My SPS certainly love it. Ken

    Quiet system

I actually have a piece of scrap carpet under my sump and pump. I had a mouse pad to at the beginning but took it out as the carpet worked fine. By the way, if you are using rigid pvc from the sump to the intake of the pump, you should switch to flex pvc. It will cut down on vibration. Ken
