Suggestions for small species FW tank

the tank is now fully planted so hard water and brackish species are out. I have been leaning towards apistos since I am more interested in breeding behaviors/courtship displays. Unless I find something else in the meantime, a pair of the next shipment of A. borellii will be mine.

    Nitrate spike ?

watch how much you feed for a bit since by removing the bioballs you are for a period of time removing a big portion of the bio filtration. the bacteria populations elsewhere in the aquarium will increase soon.

    Nitrate spike ?

you get what is termed a "nitrate factory." aerobic filtration occurs so efficiently in the high oxygen environment of an exposed bio ball that the population of anaerobic nitrate consuming bacteria living within the rock and substrate cannot keep up. the result is a slow and steady accumulation...

    Local Atlantic Water

thanks. ok disregard that last post anyway. I believe it is arsenic that keeps marine burrowers off of bulkheading. just as bad for marine inverts. For anyone considering using coastal water for your closed system, please read through this link. http://www.bbep.org/Chapters/chapter_2.pdf

    Local Atlantic Water

ds4x4, is the deck sealent you are talking about the same product that pilings and bulkhead materials are saturated in? One of the major contributing factors for the decline of eel grass Zostera marina is the use of one or more of the chemicals used to prevent burrowing marine worms, ship worms...

    Local Atlantic Water

i'm sorry I dont know what you mean by in general. Unless you mean that world wide, the reefs are generally in decline due to water quality degradation, as well as many other factors. And I dont feel NJ's water is too polluted, just know when and where to collect it and how to treat it to make...

    Local Atlantic Water

woah man...do make me get all environmental science up in this thread! just because there is no restrictions doesnt make corals tolerate waste dumping. If you were to dive any reef near a ports or cities or rivermouths, you can clearly see the damage humans have caused. And I'm not talking about...

    Nitrate spike ?

just enough rock to reduce the splashing underneath the drip plate, unless you can bypass the drip plate altogether and just have the water coming from the tank empty right into the sump with a filter sock. either vacuum the crushed coral or remove it and leave bare or add sand <- thas my...

    Local Atlantic Water

    Trace elements don't die.

    Nitrate spike ?

matt, I think your getting the idea of disturbing bacteria a little mixed. If you were to disturb the biological system, you would typically see an ammonia and nitrite spike. Unless you were severely disturbing an anaerobic environment, which is where the nitrAte consuming bacteria live, then...

Suggestions for small species FW tank

I have an 8 gallon biocube and I am looking for suggestions to stock this tank. I am looking for more bizarre behavior than anything else. I have some different pencil fish species, kuhlis, blue eye killies, tons of cherry and amano shrimp (searching for splash tetras to add to this)and a tiny...

    MRC CR2 Drip Rate

Water is going to choose the path of least resistance. I had the same issues with my mrc cr4 until I fed it with a dedicated powerhead. I dont think your line is clogging up, it just takes alot of pressure to force water through all those little hoses and media. It is alot of friction on the...

identifying a worm in my tank

harmless scavengers imo. You can waste time and money trying different methods to get rid of a "couple" of bristle worms when a healthy sand bed could have thousands. Just dont overfeed your tank and the populations should stay under control. Fireworms are notorious predators so watch out for them.

    Cleaning the glass

in addition to twice weekly (minimum) glass cleaning, keeping a light fish load or serious filtration, small frequent feedings, staying up to date on maintenance, and most of all, let the system age. Get through all the diatom, cyano, and other blooms and in addition to above you should be ok
