Smelling it is a good idea. Also if you soaked it for 2 days and didn't see an ammo spike it in I'd call it good to go. Adding it to an established system if there is significant die off might cause you some problems. Better safe than sorry.
Sand it down real well before the next coat. Hopefully between that and a little warming you'll get the saturation you're looking for. Good luck! Looking forward to the stained photos!
The Nikon 105 is the gold standard (roughly 900). The 60mm is also a good candidate at nearly half that (5 and change). The Tamron 90 is 459 as is the Sigma 105 and the Sigma 150 is 729.

Definitely swish the rocks if you can too. Having 2x the water you'll need is a good idea. That will give you plenty of water to wash things off in during the transer fprocess.
Move everything but the sand. Clean it thoroughly before reusing it. Using saltwater to clean it will enable you to move it in without having to worry about it cycling again once all the bad stuff has been removed from it. Keep a bottle of [cycle product of your choosing] handy JIC.

Normally I'd agree about buying the most expensive salt... but I just don't trust TM these days. After things not quite being "right" with the tank we've changed over to Seachem. We had used RC with no problems for quite a while, though we haven't used it in over a year.
