I would go with GFI, and waterproof covers. I've never had one pop from a power outage/surge.

It can survive, but it's rare. It's a last ditch effort to survive. In an environment like our reef tanks, chances are that moving a few feet to another part of the tank isn't going to fix what ever the issue is that made it try this survival tactic in the first place.

I’ve seen this in my reef a few times, but they eventually spit them out. I think they clean anything they can off the molt. Did yours consume the entire molt?!
