    Lighting discussion

I am not an expert, but will try to answer the question. Zooxanthelae (sp?) are thought to use 2 frequency ranges, violets to blue as well as red. These are around 400-550 nm for blue and 620-700 nm for reds. Since blue light is absorbed the slowest or bends the least (because of containing more...

    Lighting discussion

That is the real question. The tuna blue to me would be better geared towards growing, but not viewing corals. Plus they probably would bring out the fluorescents, without growing algae. You could use additional lighting for viewing. They also make one that is more half blue, but without lots of...

    Tank and container discussion

I drilled my container for a spigot. I used a 5/8 diamond circular saw bit, which is overkill since the back panel was not glass. I do have the bit if someone else wants to use it on non-tempered glass.

    DTC Build - Mark Shelly

After much thought, I settled on a pico aquarium set. It is the Top Fin 2.5 gallon tank for $50 from PET SMART. Since it comes with a light and pump set behind a bulkhead. I will not use an air stone as I had wanted. To fit the drink tank challenge theme, I drilled a hole for a top mounted...

    Tank and container discussion

I considered lots of containers. I felt the glass dispersers with spigots on the bottom best represented the spirit of the challenge. While there are many interesting containers, none met my primary condition; I wanted a container that was free enough of distortion and clear enough to take...

    DTC Build - Mark Shelly

I decided to enter the contest. First order of business is to get the live in live rock. I am starting with a partial bucket of used tank water in it. I have a power head, heater (not sure I need that), the primary coral I plan to use, two pieces of coral from my tank which I may use, but is...

    Coral discussion

I prefer softies to begin with, there is often too much flow in my main tank for them and I can't really see them in the shadows. A low light tank, when I can add additional light when I want to look at them seams ideal.

Does anyone have any experience with the API Tuna Blue PAR 38 lights. I know they are not dimmable.

    Pump and powerhead discussion

I was thinking of using an air pump, and still may. It has been decades since I used them and they were never reliable, or quiet. For some corals, such as ricordea, reports seem to indicate they live best in well oxygenated water. I also feel that it would be easier to hide, especially if I...

    Generally does everyone do it?!

I let my grand kids name them, but got some names elsewhere on Facebook. The fire shrimp is Mr. Sparky Pinchy. The clown fish are Doodlie Do and Diet Mountain Dew. The yellow tang is Mellow Yellow. The Yellow Wrasse is Steve Madden, The Orchid Dottyback is Earle. The Royal Gramma is Bia. The...

Believe it or not, I took this photo of the rarely seen Minnie ghost fish in the tank. Funny, Marissa has a Minnie shirt on also.

Marissa and I tried so long to get a good picture of the puffer with his blue eyes. We never did get a POTM worthy picture, but these instead.

This was one long tank! The sump was just as long. It was fiberglass coated plywood built into the stand. I was jealous of his amphipods. This was my granddaughter's favorite picture. But this is a better picture of the other chromis.
