The tank is in good shape and isn't really scratched. Black trim. It can't be drilled, it's all tempered. It would make a good sump for a 125g or larger six foot tank, or as a hospital tank. $25, pickup in Center City.
I use Seachem Reef Builder and Seachem Ca Advantage as a 2 part, which costs about $20 per year per 100 gallons of system size - so it's controlled, pretty cheap, is really easy to use and has all the elements. Also have a tube from the outside bringing air to the skimmer to maintain correct pH.
The quality of the video and photos will be determined by the lens, not the camera. Since the Canon and Nikon SLR can swap lenses, you can get a better quality lens down the road. Like eg. A Nikon or Canon 180mm fixed f1.8 lens, which IMO is the best bang for the buck can be had used for about...
Also worth noting, if you go up another $100 you can get video features, like in the Nikon D5000. We have one and can vouch for it.
Better yet though, if you buy used you get stuff thats just as good for 30% less on average.
For good to great shots and quality you'd go with an slr camera body, which enables interchanging lenses. At the hobbyist level, the most important part and only part of the equipment is the lens. I know about Nikon, and you can get the last generation d3000 for that price. It comes with a...
The live sand sitting on the shelf is "live" with bacteria. The bacteria doesn't die in the bag. It's sitting there quietly or may have gone dormant. It takes extremes like heat, UV waves, anti-biotics, etc to kill bacteria. IMO it doesn't matter which option you do, they'll both work fine...
Also, just an FYI that calk and alk are mutually exclusive. your calk at 440 is higher than you need it, so if you back it down closer to 400, then the alk will be free to tend upwards.
Can you do a favor and summarize the 2nd setup. I'm just learning yet about LEDs. Can it work on a 48" x 18" tank, that is clear of corals on the outside 6 inches of both ends?
For the last four years we've been running heaters that we get straight from China. They are about $8 including shipping for each, off Ebay, regardless of wattage up to 300 watts. They are glass bodies and submersible. Despite being submersible, we keep the tops with the thermostat sticking...
I prefer doing heaters in 3s, so IMO three 100 watts if you keep your tank around 76. If one burnt out the other two should keep it above 72 until the bad one's replaced.
