I agree that controllers are the way to go to set up a heater. However a Ranco or anything else won't do a bit of good for a broken heater.

Replace it. Even if you getting working again it is only a matter of time before it goes out again. Replace it now and be done with it.

You are right it is a red bubble algae. That one doesn't spread as fast as the other species and is actually sought after by some folks because it is rather decorative.

I've bleached rock and then soaked it in a dechlorinator for a few days and had no trouble using it. I've never tried putting it in the oven to dry it out though.

For high quality, moderately priced seahorses take a look at www.seahorsesource.com. They are a breeder, not a wholesaler or importer.

Seahorses are social animals and do best in pairs or groups. 15 gallon is too small, minimum tank size is 29 gallons for 1 pair. You want a moderate flow but not enough to blow them against the glass. What do you consider expensive?
