The only disease that I know of that would kill fish that quickly is velvet. Did you transfer the old sand? If I were to guess, I say ammonia did them in.....tank cycled again. Ammonia is very toxic to fish.

Hard to diagnose without seeing in person, but the first thing I'd be looking at is the thermocouple. It is the most common reason a pilot light won't stay lit. The cost of the part is between 10 - 25 dollars. Relatively easy to replace. An adjustable wrench and some busted knuckles...
