I think if you have any SPS they should be closer to the top generally speaking. Try to decide what you want to do so you have a plan before you proceed. Mixed reef with SPS has different requirements then without SPS ect. You might want to increase the amount of LR before you start adding things.

I agree with both of the last two comments. The best example I can think of is Bonaire, they have created a good economy by protecting what nature gave them. Divers really appreciate what they have so it is win win.

I have some live sand but would like to see if there is some established pods ect in the sand, even just sand shipped is pretty expensive.
