Doug and Erna, I have been away for a while and just saw this...My deepest condolence. God Bless. Paul

    My 90G ...

Gogol, do I read this right, you are giving up on the stand. Not so fast...that stand is, without question, repairable. If you want to put a top on it, that is relatively easy. I would suggest using plywood over the redwood link you included above. Plywood is much more stable and won't warp like...

    My 90G ...

Sayan, I won’t give up on the tank yet. I’d take a close look at the seams and see if it is something that could be re-siliconized. The stand appears as if it is missing a slab of ¾ plywood on the top. Either way, give me a call or PM and I’ll come over and take a look at it...my other hobby is...

    Lets see your freshwater tanks!

Wow, two, 300 watt heaters in a 75 gallon. Why so much wattage? I have a single heater and I think it's 100 or 150 watt in my 75 and it keeps the tank toasty.

    Lets see your freshwater tanks!

It doesn’t get any lower tech than my freshwater tank. The experts will tell you it can’t be done, but it’s 75 gallons with a stone substrate (no mud, sand, peat or anything other then a bunch of stones), fully planted (four varieties of plants), low lights (2, 40W T-12s in a shoplight fixture...

    law enforcement issues?

I see potential legal precedence being written here. If a cop sees the “glow,” is it probable cause or discrimination if he busts down your door? Ed, the glowing tank is clearly visible from your front picture window while the plants are in the basement. “Yes officer, I’m into saltwater...

October Meeting: Saturday the 17th (Bridgewater)

I also have to work…bummer. :( But I did sign up for the meeting. :D I work outdoors and I’m hoping for hard and steady rain, because if it rains, I don’t work. If I come, I’ll be bringing a Mexican Pizza with Chips. I will need to impose on our hosts and use your oven for a half hour to warm...

    home heating

If you also need a new furnace, forget about the chimney and put in a high efficiency furnace that can be vented right out the side of the house…no chimney needed. Mikem is the guy.

    Led T5 lamps anyone.

What do you know about Sunbright? A little red flag goes up in my mind when I see relatively low prices, no product details and price differentials that are minimal. Look at their 20 inch unit ($199) versus their 6 foot unit ($269)….only a $70 upcharge for more then four more feet of aluminum...

    small electrical shocks??????????

First make sure you are using the VOM correctly. And 23 volts is still a sign of something leaking too much voltage. A few volts is more the norm.

    small electrical shocks??????????

mfisher, good catch. I too went back and re-read, and the light could be the problem. So that's worth a look as well. However, the other possibility is that the light is acting at the ground to complete the circuit of something else in the tank. As I mentioned in the earlier post, use a VOM and...

    Portland Type III cement

All of these that you quote are readi-mixes that come with the sand/lime/stone, dependent on the mix. They are all the types you find at a Home Depot or Lowes. Portland is pure cement. You will need to mix it with other ingredients, dependent on what you are doing. Typically either sand or rock...

    small electrical shocks??????????

Unplug each and every submersible electrical thing you have in your tank/sump one at a time until you ID the thing that has the voltage leak…powerheads, return pumps, skimmer pumps, heaters, etc. Preferably you are using a VOM and not sticking you hand in the water to see if you still get that...

    Portland Type III cement

Any good masonry supply house would carry Portland-all grades. In Sayreville, we have Riverside Supply. But here’s the deal....it only comes in a 94 pound bags....still probably under $20. I think the demo that was done at a meeting about 10-12 months ago (maybe merv???), he used hydraulic...
