45 Gallon Custom Marinland Cube Tank Build

I think you are confusing a bulkhead with a union. The picture you show is a union. First make sure the rubber o-ring is in there. Also make sure the flat mating surfaces are clean. I also coat the o-ring with a plumber’s grease or pool lube. These are non-petroleum base lubricants that help to...

    Good Frag Bags

Can't beat the group buy in May. Who's bags don't you like...and why? I thought they were all pretty much the same poly bags.

    Wine Lovers Out There!?

Try one of the German Liebfraumilchs.  A Liebfraumilch is a nice semisweet white wine.  The one great thing about German wines is that by law they must include a “quality” label on the bottle.  Google it to find out more but I will tell you that bottles labeled Prädikatswein, (or bottles older...

Meet and Greet - Reef Encounter

So some of us met up at Reef Encounter at 504 Hudson Street in Hackensack….by the way, very easy to get to from all the major routes. We came in off the Turnpike and returned by the Parkway, and very close to route 80, 46 and I think 3. We missed you RFD4, but Audi0s, evoIX, Rod, BobnKate and...

    UV STERLIZER OR NOT???

Not so fast. Flow rate through the unit is very important. If the dwell time is not long enough, it will not kill the little buggers. If you go with one of these, make sure your flow rate is within the manufacturers specs for flow. Also, it does not discriminate…it will kill the good stuff too...

ICH- Bad day at the office

With my limited experience with crypto, it would depend on how bad the fish was infected. If I caught it early enough I’d go with the least stressful approach. I’m convinced that stress is a factor in the fish showing signs of crypto….especially with the ich-magnet fish…Hippos and Powder Blue...

    TDS Level

As far as TDS goes, 120 isn’t bad…but that comes with a caveat….TDS only tells you that there is stuff in your water. It doesn’t tell you what that stuff is. So stating that 120 is good or bad really can’t be stated because we don’t know what that mystery stuff is…especially when it comes to...

Anyone ever had to reinfoce their floor?

With this thread still active, I decided to try jumping in front of my 75 gallon tank. It is situated in the living room and happens to be positioned so that it is parallel to the beams below (worst case scenario). I weigh 220 pounds…all muscle in my dreams. I was shocked to see the amount of...

Thanks Brian and Deb - Nov. Meeting

Deb and Brian, thanks for hosting this months meeting. I’m envious of those who can open their house to, for the most part, a bunch of strangers, and still make them feel at home. Great job. Also, great meeting all you strangers! ;D Paul

Anyone ever had to reinfoce their floor?

Well having never met you, I can’t say if you are good ;D. Again, I’ll repeat, it’s not the tank making the floor flex, it some other large mass. Your refrigerator is probably more pounds per square than the tank…put your level on that and walk by it. Or for that fact, put the level on any light...

    Do Freshwater aquariums stink?

Having had freshwater tanks for over 45 years, I can tell you emphatically that they do not stink. I can’t even imagine what you would have to do to make them start to stink. I currently have one in my living room and one at the top of my stairs….no smells whatsoever. By the way, this is a...

Anyone ever had to reinfoce their floor?

Phoobar Science A conventional 75 gallon tank has a footprint of 18 x 48 inches. If we say a gallon of water weighs 8.4 pounds, then a 75 gallon tank weighs (75x8.4), 630 pounds. This calculates out to 105 pounds per square foot. If we assume an average person standing occupies a 10x11 inch...
