Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I read the first line of your post.
I then went and mixed up some Potassium Permanganate with Sulphuric acid to make permanganic acid, a highly caustic cleaning acid. I dipped the powerhead in and watched it start to rapidly sizzle, and then came back to finish reading your post...
With all the chatter about RO/DI water, I have never tested my RO water and would like to pick up a meter to find out what I’m putting out. Any suggestions on the brand / type of meter I need to get to do the testing? Thanks.
You don't want to use sand as a base for your rock. What happens is that the "diggers" undermine the rock and could cause for your rock to tumble over. You need to put rock directly on the glass, egg crate, cutting board, or what ever hard stuff you use. This way the diggers won't undermine the...
Wow….I’m feeling seasick. :o
I like the ruler showing a 2 inch wave….good stuff.
Now, where’s my surfboard!
Did you do the original build or did you include the modifications, that seem to continue to come?
They are submersible and come in different flow ratings....the Mag 9.5 pushes 950 gallons an hour at zero head height (I think...or at some fixed head height). The 1200 gph mag is listed as Mag 12. Pretty straight forward. Sounds like you have a similar size display tank. I have a 48 gallon...
Depends on your application and size of your tank. I’m running a Danner Mag Drive 9.5 on a 48 gallon display. No pump noise…put plenty of water-movement noise. This would NOT work on a 180+ gallon tank with big sump / refugium…you probably would be using some external pump, that I know nothing...
Wow, a ½ inch drop within (I’m assuming) a 6 foot tank; and a ¼ drop within…maybe 18 – 24 inches. How old is this house and are there potential structural problems?
Anyway, typically what is used to level bathroom situations is a material called leveling concrete…it’s available at HD & Lowes...
First I agree that rock directly on glass will not cause the glass to crack.
In support of egg crate…rock on glass slides around. If you build a rock structure that has lateral forces involved, you potentially could “push” the rock on that hard, slick surface of glass. By using egg crate, you...
Egg crate!
First place the egg crate.
Next goes the rock.
Finally the sand.
You don't want the sand supporting your rock. With time, the "diggers" will undermine the rock and could potentially cause for it to go tumbling down. Placing rock directly on the egg crate gives it a solid foundation.
If the sand is ferromagnetic (attracted to magnets) and will conduct electricity….you attach little magnets to all your fish. A magnet passing through a field generates electricity. We can solve the world energy problem, of course, one living room at a time. ;D
Re: HELP Orange Worm What is It?
Thanks Matt when youre a newbie and you see these strange things, it sort of scares you. Thanks for the quick response. The Spaghetti worm lives.
{EDIT} and John!
Need Help! Cruising across the front glass of the refugium was this orange worm-like thing with hair projectiles coming off the front third of the head portion. Is this good or should I rip the SOB out of the tank? Never saw this before. I only have a crappy point-n-shoot, so this is the best I...
I am sold on refugiums with protein skimmers. I believe canister filters (and other HOB fiber pad filters) are great for fresh water. For salt, they are nitrate factories that just fowl up your water. No matter what size tank (even nano guys use them), a refugium is the way to go...and for small...
Just did a quick look on craigslist and found these:
40 gallon complete setup

55 gallon a little over budget

30 gallon a little over budget

With a limited budget, and just starting out...cool your jets. The tank first needs to cycle (about a month or so) and then you can slowly start adding some stuff. You should be looking a "newbie" corals. I should know...I'm still a newbie. I'm sure there's a list somewhere. I'll look...or if...
Assuming it was a house build in the last 70 years or so, the floor can easily support a 55 gallon. We now have almost 100 gallons on an approximately 3' by 2' footprint...not a problem.
I think it could be do-able if you buy used and look for deals on used stuff. Maybe buy an entire system off something like craigslist that comes with everything.
If you buy new, for a 55g tank, you can easily pay $300 + just for the lights.
I suggest you do as much reading as possible, saver...
Re: new tank starting
When you say "reef," do you mean a FOWLR (fish only with live rock) or do you mean with coral? If it's a FOWLR, the filtration demand would not be as great. If it's with coral, I would suggest a refugium with a protein skimmer. Let's see what others say!
