Our first tank was a 48 gallon bowfront display tank with a 45 gallon sump/refugium. I think it is an excellent size for a “normal” size starter tank (don’t want to insult the nano guys). However, in the process of putting this tank / sump together, we had already started planning the build for...
That’s called relieving the stand to fit the bulkheads by using an ax! I also scratched my head on that one….is the integrity of the stand still there…will it support the tank. We shall see.
If the barbs are glued, I would just stick with flex tube all the way into your sump…assuming it’s just below the tank. Why bother using a short little section of flex just to go into a short section of pvc into the sump. I would only go to pvc if you where dropping this down into the basement...
I’ve got an HOB overflow that is sucking air bubbles. Currently running a simple siphon off the top of the overflow and it has been stopping because of the overflow sucking up too much air. I’m trying to stay as green as I possibly could, trying to avoid putting on an aqua lifter (another plug...
Egg crate, I believe, is the norm. I guess if you want to put something else that would not allow contact with glass....plexiglass. Egg crate (light diffuser), and acrylic are available at HD.
According to the article, unless you are using Coralife salt, your silica numbers will be high. Let's wait and see...and let us know whos salt you use.
Wow Phyl…great article. I retract what I said earlier….it’s your salt (and maybe with a little sand effect). Of the thirteen salts they tested, only one (Coralife), was below the “standard” for silica? All the rest were above the acceptable level for silica. My next question is who developed the...
Its the sand! One major difference between play sand and overpriced aquarium sand is the silica content.
Silica from your tap typically runs from a few parts per million up to a high of around 100 ppm dependent on the source. Realize there is no government standard for silica in tap water. ...
Mike, are you sure you silica problem is coming from your water? Did you test your water to know that is the source? My first guess for a source would be the sand you are using or the salt. My two cents!
Let me preface my ignorance by stating that I think a cynarina is a LPS. I have a healthy cynarina (which is commonly mistaken for a scolymia), that I feed by the book. It is doing great, but I want to hear what reality is as far as feeding and what you feed your cynarina or scolymia?
Have a RBTA that, since I picked it up a month and a half ago, has at least doubled in size. Feeding it by the book. I’m curious what others are doing as far as feeding. Am I feeding this guy too much? I have visions of Little Shop of Horrors...”Feed me.” And what do you feed your anemone?
I’ve never seen this discussed, but wouldn’t the cheapest light be the big light bulb in the sky. With all the green building going on, would it be feasible to pipe in the light from the sun to illuminate your take. Here’s an example of light pipe:

I would first make sure where it is leaking…from the threads or from the bulkhead connection. If it is the threads, instead of Teflon, you could use pipe dope. It is commonly used on metal pipe, but is also good on PVC.
