cheato -use it for nutrient export
rock - use it if you plan on breeding pods
sand - don't bother.
Given the limited real estate in the hob fuges - i'd just put cheato in.

looks great! when you get the LR - be sure to have buckets to take water out. The LR will displace some of that volume you have in there. Think of it as your first water change. ;D

I would probably pass. Perhaps I'd consider hooking one up to a small bare bottom QT tank.
Caveat: I've never used one personally. So perhaps someone who actually has used it and found it to be helpful can chime in here.
Not necessary but I do it to keep my feather dusters happy. Phytoplankton is naturally consumed by Zooplankton (e.g. copepods). If you don't care about copepods (and maybe only care about the big amphipods) - then it's not necessary to dose. Fatheree (author for tridacnid clams) would also posit...
i think the answer depends on what tank temps you get in the summer. A MH/T5 fixture (like say a maristar) would increase teh amount of heat in the tank - potentially forcing the purchase of a chiller.

chuck - for full disclosure i've used the technique with astraes, mexican turbo snail, chestnut snail and nerite snails. No issues.

There is another method that can be done with snails - and that would be to hold them above the water line until they affix to the glass, then let them take their sweet time deciding whether to go into the water or not.
That stated, you really cannot go wrong with drip and temp...
