POWER HEAD AND LIGHTS
Power Head
I’ve added an MP10 to the tank. It was used and needed new bearings. I replaced the bearings (detailed HERE), and am still not happy with the slight amount of noise it’s producing. I’m still scratching my head over this.
Lights
Finally decided on...
Austyn, thanks for the offer, but my fat guy is enjoying his vacation in nirvana bliss with all that hair algae. I’m not in any rush for him to finish his job of cleaning up the algae….my guess is two to three weeks. But I do have a concern with you having two. Unless you have a big tank...
I do have a very thin rubber disc on mine.....stuck with glue/adhesive.....you can see it in the picture above (first post). But I did buy this used and got no other "spacers" with the unit.
Thanks for the heads-up John. I actually made a slight boo-boo. The plexiglass I have was sold as ¼ inch. I just measured it, and it’s only 3/16 of an inch thick. So my total thickness of the glass plus this disc is around (0.23 + 0.19) 0.42 inches. I was actually surprised with the...
So maybe I was a bit premature in my favorable response to the Boca bearing change on my MP10. I walked into the fish room today and I can now hear this subject Vortech while standing next to the tank. Right after doing the bearing change, I could not hear the pump unless I moved my ear...
Vortech’s overpriced powerheads are known for eating bearings on their dryside, usually evident in becoming very loud. If they are still under warrantee, no problem, you get a new dryside replacement. If they are out of warrantee, your choice was to buy a new dryside for mucho bucks……..until...
I’m not familiar with the picture posting stuff within our website. I’ve never used it.
Here’s what I do. I first load my pictures into www.photobucket.com. It’s a free photo posting site. You are able to edit and adjust the photos. Then you simply copy and paste the IMG photo into the...
Oh crap! Now I have to get a fat cat to test my stand!
Actually on the subject of cats, my son had two cats at his place in Rhode Island. As mentioned, he took down his tank and dump everything here. So I went to temporarily use his lights until I find something more...
Hair Algae Attack
Holy Cow!
I took Thermosts (Brian) advise and put my big fat Mexican Turbo into the JBJ about an hour ago. Is there such a thing as a turbo dying from eating too much? He has already mowed about a quarter of the back wall of hair algae. I’m almost expecting to...
Darn you Sunny!
This is where I wish I had a FOWLR!
Do you think I could fit these two guys in the JBJ 28 I just set up? :o
(Note that I am questioning why these guys are in your frag tank if they are coral eaters??? Plenty of food???)
So is it me, or are these stock stands for the JBJ nano’s a piece-o-crap! I am using the mini Magfloat, and the stand is rocking back and forth. I have to clean the glass gingerly so the stand doesn’t sway too much. I’m now thinking before I start to “built” this tank, I need to build a...
Chris, you are more than welcome to come by whenever. But there isn’t much to see, unless you want to see a nice crop of hair algae, and now less than ten aptasia (I hope).
And you are too kind with your offer. However, 48 inches is a touch too long. The longest dimension (within the...
THE APTASIAN WAR OF 2013
As mentioned, the rock was infested with 50 plus of these little pests. I started the battle with my old standby……1 – 2 mls of concentrated lemon (or lime) juice per aptasia, administered with a syringe. After about five sorties, I came to the realization that...
Leaching is one issue, but the other is the remaining dead stuff in the rock….that can’t be washed out. Therefore, that is the more important reason why you need to re-establish the bacterial beasts…… to chew up the dead and restart the nitrification process.
Josh, how big is your tank? If you have a big boy, you might be able to get away with adding un-cured rock. Otherwise, you would be better off curing that rock first.....doesn't need light....just saltwater, a heater and a little flow....in a Brute or Tupperware....for at least a...
Brandon, can’t you see the smiles on the fishes faces? :p
Look at the brightness difference, especially noted with the two Vortechs….first picture they are in partial darkness, the second, they have a brighter halo around them.
