You might wanna check and see what the constant water level for that skimmer needs to be. For instance, my Coralife, the pump needs to be 3" below the water surface, so I have it set up in the first chamber where the water level never changes.

For what its worth, I have the mini-jet 600 on my TLF with a ball valve to dial it back. not really sure what the "GPH" on it is after being dialed back, but I dial it back visually so the carbon isn't moving...
depends on the reactor and how much media you have in it.
If it's just something like a TLF reactor, the min-jets are good, with a ball valve to dial back the flow so that the water moves through the carbon, but does not move the carbon. There was discussion in I think a phosban reactor thread...

If you are cycling, and you are seeing ammonia that is going down, you should be seeing nitrites go up, then nitrites go down and nitrates go up.
