Give the 24/25" height on the tank, I think both the 39watt T5s and the 150watt MH lighting you are looking at will be insufficient for the tank.
For MH, I'd think you'd want at least 250watt, and given the 2'x2' coverage of metal hallide, you'd need 3 of them.
Best bet is still going to...
Thanks hawk, but AO is a heckuva drive for me (over 2 hours one way). Gonna see if I can't get one of the closer places to see about getting me one. Probably after the holidays when things start to settle down for everyone.
This true. Was curious as to whether one was better suited to it than the other. Just like certain angels will desimate reef tanks, and others wont. Same species, different behaviors among sub species.
That, and the scribbled isn't as common, so that automatically makes it more attractive to me! ;D
I think it's this heater:

I have one in a 10 gallon tank, and the larger one in a 30 gallon tank and have zero problems with the temp fluctuating. I will say the "78 degrees" think is not accurate. It keeps my tanks closer...
Sweet. Foxfaces are usually easily found at stores. Haven't seen a scribbled rabbitfish that I can recall. I think maybe I'm more drawn to that one because it isn't as prevalent and "common". But if I can't find one, I may try the foxface.
Thanks for everyones input so far.
Great topic for discussion. Following along.
I'd have to agree that the algae needs to have the nutrients to survive in addition to the lighting.
My personal opinion would be that the "fouling" light spectrum would only serve to accelerate something that already has potential to begin with.
I'll preface everything here with saying I really have no idea how to price some of this stuff. So if the prices seem high, don't hesitate to make me a reasonable offer on it. I am one of those guys who "hordes" stuff over time, and I would love to see this stuff go to someone here that will...
Yes, I know the foxface is a rabitfish. The question was about one potentially being more of a nuesance anglae eater the the other. I was reading a book yesterday and the author mentioned the scribbled rabbitfish specifically being a nuisance algae eater, just hadn't heard it before and was...
My understanding of the carbon was that it isn't supposed to be packed tightly, and that the flow should be just enough to cause the top to appear to "percolate". i think there were some posts about that from boomer a short time back.
Nice! Thanks Taz. That's exactly the info I was looking for. The TLF reactors require taking them completely off line to change and refill. Can be a PITA sometimes.
Anyone have any experience with these?
Have been reading that they are known for grazing on nuisance algae, and picking up the slack on the algaes the tangs won't eat.
Is the foxfaced known for the same?
I'm hesitant about them for 2 reasons, 1: the venomous spines (i get allergic reactions...
How difficult are they to change media in regularly?
I can see they look to be rock solid, and given the canisters they are made from are the same as the RO/DI units, would be virtually leak proof.
Also, how much of a pain is it to adapt that small hose to a properly sized powerhead?
I had one of the "old style" ones a few years back, and it was great, until one of the switches shorted out and melted. I ripped it apart and turned it into a retro since everything but the switch and housing were still good.
Good prices on those though! Especially the "new style" with the...
