    Clown ID

Cool. Thanks Boomer. That's definitely him! Guess "free" (had to drive about an hour+, set up an emergency tank, etc) along with his strawberry dottyback buddy wasn't such a bad deal! :)

    help with identification please

Hey Harry, sorry to hear about your algae outbreak. But it might be best if you explore potential roots to the outbreak. For instance, how are your nutrient levels? Lighting period? How's your water change regiment? Using RO/DI? Tap water? Those kinds of things. "Treat the illness, not the...

Cool. Thanks Boomer. The underdeveloped bars were the only thing that still had me scratching my head. THought maybe he was just "different". LOL!

    Miracle grow plant light

Hey gogol, seems your heart is set on LEDs. hehe. If that is the case, I have been experimenting with these on my 90 gallon "softie reef": http://cgi.ebay.com/AQUARIUM-LED-LIGHT-TUBE-4-foot-300-LED-10-000Kw-plug_W0QQitemZ230385289594QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a408897a...

    LIGHT Questions???

There are some other softies you can keep successfully under PC lighting. You can keep zoanthids for one, there are some pretty neat pulsing xenias out there that positioned correctly in the tank can do quite well under that lighting as well. Do a little research, check with some club members...

    LIGHT Questions???

SPS is going to require alot more light than that. At least T5, most likely Metal Halide.

    Clown ID

Thanks hawk. Been doing some research while waiting for opinions. It's difficult to tell in the pic (camera phones suck) but zooming in, it appears to have 10 dorsal spikes vs the 11 the true percula has. This seems to be the only actual physical attribute difference. The rest, like thicker vs...

    help with identification please

If it helps at all, I've had emeralds in just about every tank I've had. Never had an issue with them picking at corals. Only rocks. Even had one that used to come out at feeding time and "evil canevil" off of a rock ledge to grab falling pieces of squid and shrimp. Was funny as anything to watch.

    Clown ID

Ok, I can never figure this out. Perc, Osc, blah blah blah. Can someone tell me which clown this is? Got him as a rescue from someone on Craigslist. "death in the family" "noone knows how to care for him" etc. etc. etc. Nursed him back to health. He was in pretty bad shape when I got him...

    LIGHT Questions???

I'd kick it up to at least a T5 fixture. I did pretty well with just about anything, including clams on the sand bed, under T5 lighting on my first 55 gallon tank. I'd do at least 4x54 watt with individual reflectors, 2x 10,000k and 2 actinic. But if I had it to do over again, I probably would...

    algae problem

Couple of things. What kind of "top off water" and mixing water are you using? RO/DI or straight from the tap? Seems to me, at 6 months old, without knowing much more, and the length of lighting, you probably have a nutrient buildup that has taken this long to overpower your water changes. If...

    Unknown Snail¿ Need an ID

+3. Mine usually come out of the sand and low rock outcroppings right after a heavy feeding. Just one more really neat tiny creature to study the habits of to me! (and by study, I mean stare open mouthed at the tank and say "wow thats cool" over and over again! ;) )

    Yellow tang with black spots

Yup. Treat all the fish in a seperate tank, keep the display tank fallow for at lesat 6 to 12 weeks. The longer the better. There are multiple methods of treatment you can research on the web, and choose the one you think is best, but catching it early you have a better chance of beating it.

    Live Black worms

For those of us "down south", Aquarium Center in Blackwood does have blackworms. Picked some up tonight. Fish went NUTS for em. Every single fish. May just try my luck at the butterfly again. Thanks Paul!

    algae problem

Hi Greg: Few more details on your tank might help us answer the root cause. Size? Equipment? How long has it been running? What do your major parameters test at? How often between water changes? How much? Those kinds of things. Generally algae outbreaks are attributed to high nutrient counts...

Water Flow in the Aquarium - Experiments and learnings from Jake Adams' workshop

I don't know Phyl. I wish that were the case, they are about 4 years old now. Got them both at about 3/4" long WAAAY back when I started my first saltwater tank. They were my first fish. But I didn't think they would be spawning right there smack dab in the front middle of the tank like that...

Bill's MACNA Logs - Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC's)

Thanks Boomer! When I bought the carbon, I WAY overbought the carbon! LOL! To the tune of a 5 gallon bucket full, and another half full. stil.. a LONG time after the group buy. LOL! Ok, I have only been running it a few days, will mark the calendar for change time. Thanks for the input, always...

Water Flow in the Aquarium - Experiments and learnings from Jake Adams' workshop

The only thing it takes to get my sand stirred up is my female tomato clown... Grr... I put the sand back, and within an hour, she has dug a 6" diamter hole dead smack center in the tank all the way down to the glass. She's driving me crazy. Almost 4 years with this pair of clowns, and she has...
