This idea is out there but I have seen a couple shots where they drill a hole INTO the canister filter running wires for a submersible light. They put the fuge in the canister using the canister pump for water motion, live rock, and cheato. Then they clean it out every now and then.

There will always be a 'largest' and a 'smallest' so if you cull the smallest the bigger one might just turn his attention to the next smallest.
