Using RO water will make life easier. Less crap that goes in the less you have to worry about. The smaller the tank the faster it can go wrong. I have to agree with everyone. A plain FOWLR system would have been much nicer. I mean with that much live rock you can end up with some interesting hitchhikers if nothing else.

Mine went everywhere when it was smaller. Now is spends more time on the sand. Though it is not the size of the monster that Mike has. They are excellent IMO. And yes they vanish on occasion.

I think you should be OK too. I would do 10 gallons ish should be good. If you have bio balls in that back chamber you might be generating something? Could it be your test kit is crappy? Looks good though that is some nice rock you added. ;)
