Yes the mud has life in it but it pack down super tight,you get the snails in there working about and you see lots of bubbles coming from the mud. These bubbles are basicly toxic from what I experinced,the more the crabs dug around the worse my water quality became I guess they were releasing...

BAd experience here.... I had my first sump mudded up and it crashed bad and I cared for my bed as close to the T as possable. My sumps now consists of: 50% Agri-alive 25% Agrigate 25% Live mix from the main system, never a problem with any crashing or system spikes,In my new sump (72x12x15)...

Had the same problem with my AGA 150 mega flow system. I solved my problem by extending the intake pipe as close to the bottom of my sup as possable,but leaving room to add a pvc T on the bottom of the pipe. By splitting my intake flow to the 2 corners of the sump it eliminated my micro bubble...

I never cycled mine but I watched my paramiters closely for the first 2 weeks. I also left the light cycle 24-7 for the first month but now run it opposite the tank lighting. 1 thing if possable take some of the live sand and rock from the main display to speed up your seeding in the fuge. HTH

You can also get tank bred neon gobies they too will clean fish,or you can get a med. called no sick fish totaly reef safe but expensive little bottle is about $60.00 works great though.
