In little pico tanks like that I have seen a lot of sexy shrimp as a standard critter. Just a thought, I don't know if I would do a fish. Soft coral would probably work too you might even get away with some zoas.

I would go with the 4s on the 5ft tank, if you want sps on the bow then just buy the 4s. I love the pumps personally. I don't have any problems though use the flow directors. Without they can kick up a ruckass.

Hey Chuck, I think a sump and refugium are great ideas. I have a lighting fixture from Catalina Aquarium(the sump you have listed).  But I didn't buy their sump. I bought mine here...

Just keep up your water changes and if you can find a way to do a refugium you are set. Phyl pointed out the chemical warfare problem but without a skimmer you can still run carbon phosbane or a combo.
