Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
It goes back to Einstein and his calculations. Without getting technical, it actually applies to many different things in the light and electrical world. Light will be 4 times "dimmer" at twice the distance from the light source. It takes 4 times the light increase in "power" to double the...
No idea where that suggestion came from but it doesn't make much sense to me. I'd run the canister filter exactly the way you plan to run it once the tank is cycled. Do the weekly 5-7 day cleaning just as you will continue to do.

Billy using the IceCap 330 or 660 ballasts you don't need to do this as the ballast already does it for you, but I'm sure YOU already know this!
The 330/660 will take a 54W bulb and on average generate the equiv of 84 watts. Some bulbs do even better. UV brand seems to do about the best among...
Yep, I'd agree with that completely. The finer the particle size the better from a nitrate processing ability but you don't want it packed so you mix in denser particle size sand so you get pockets. It's in these pockets that most of the nitrate breakdown takes place.

120g dream tank? That's not the tank, that's the sump. :)
Just kidding with ya. It's not really the size IMHO as much as how you "decorate" it and stock it. I've seen stunning 75g tanks that leave you absolutely amazed and look plenty big enough with the rock and coral work done to perfection...
Mr_X you'll like your new setup much better!
Mott, no chance I'll be carrying them in the store. I've read way to many horror stories on RC about them. :) I just got a real good deal on two of them and figured at the prices I paid for them I could use them as parts and still be ahead of the...
If you are getting good water movement in the tank (you should be) then it really shouldn't matter where you get the water from.
I myself have never bought into the idea of < 1" or > 3" of sand. The explanations given don't make sense to me from a scientific standpoint. It's like a combination...
Just tell her you decided to save the money for the next visit to a store you like better so you would have more funds available and could get something you really "need". :)

Re: Eagle Reef Systems, Inc.
bconn, check with them and see if this can be handled via another LFS. If so and you aren't to far from Hamilton (near Trenton) I can probably be of assistance to you in getting this fixed/replaced.

While there is a lot of truth in that I don't think the Odyssea fixtures are as bad as everyone says they are. At least the newer models are OK. I've got one older and one newer model and there is a world of difference between them.
They ARE NOT in the same class as Ice Cap, etc but then again...
Besides the salt I mix myself, I l like Seachem Reef Salt as it matches natual sea water parameters better then any other salt I've ever tested (except Boran levels are high which helps keep pH also high).

If you are looking to get maximum PAR out of your lamps you will probably be better off going the IceCap Ballast route. Check out Sanjay's site for ballast/lamp configurations.

DON'T LET ANYONE INFLUENCE you to move quicker then what you think should be done. You got it right, PATIENCE, PATIENCE and more PATIENCE. The more solid your starting foundation is the better your tank will do when you start adding the fish and inverts.
Here's the kicker. The bacteria that...
