what is the size of the return pipe? 1" is about 600 gph. You can plumb some of that extra water back into a sump which you can use as a feed pump for a filter, a skimmer feed, or even a reactor of some sorts.
Take a look at your alkalinity as well, tips usually get burnt when the alk is a little on the high side, and move that poor boy away from that mean old LPS!

I don't think there is a direct correlation of one of my emerald crabs dying, but I lost one today. I'll be monitoring the other two in the tank, but I did notice that they are out more than normal picking at whatever is left to pick on the rocks. Most of the brown algae...
thanks Renee- I'll research that as well to be versed in long term deleterious effects of glucose in a reef environment. With regular bi monthly 5-10% water changes, however, I am curious to see if the removal of 'excess' sugar compounds via water changes will offset that. Heavy skimming is a...
you're fine with the lights coming from the sides-
(I have no sand on my tank and when my sump light turns on, the feeeeshies have this eeerie glow on them from underneath, kinda like dracooola)
Although, I never thought of the stressing them out part, maybe I'll throw some aluminum foil...
no prob mike, your input should greatly benefit this thread as well. I just checked my Cheapo Vodka brand and it is also 80 proof, 40% (you had me scared there for a sec, lol. I thought Cheapo Vodka also meant less proofage)
Yesterday, I noticed that my skimmer is working a little better than...
Sugar dosing, Vinegar dosing and Vodka dosing all use the same principle as the addition of some kind of pure Carbon addition. I preferred to use Vodka since I am able to be consistent with it with a syringe instead of weighing the sugar or eyeballing a teaspoon etc.
I tried using Sugar in the...
The Stockman stand pipe is basically the same thing as a plain old standpipe but IMO prevents blockage (if you're not using the foam that does around it) since the cap acts as some kind of pre-filter and the hole on the top allows you to regulate airflow to compensate for any gurgling/swooshing...
Bill, if you don't remember my stockman re-creation/re-modification, here's some pics from my old thread on RC:
Finished stockman:
Main return down flow pipe without the cap:
The cap:

The breakdown:
The comparison (durso is on the right- pain in the butt to remove...
October 7- (Day 1) 0.4 mL
No major strands of hair algae, Corals brown and stressed from breakdown last week, Skimmate on deltec at approximately 3/4 cup, but has not been emptied for 5 days. Skimmer neck very dirty from particulates from transfer and new salt just premixed. Salinity measured at...
Dosage Tracking:
I created a spreadsheet based on formulations from the last issue of RK mag. What a convenience since I also estimate my tank to be at 100 net gallons of water (could be a teeny tad less). I used the regimen they already had, but I needed it to "look" official:
Coral...
I'm adding this thread here since even though Vodka dosing may not be considered advanced, it is to me. I will be documenting this thread with a pictorial, and posting along the way with my progress and or hinderances, my method to my madness of "unorthodoxness" and hopefully those who...
Bill, why not change the dursos into a stockman style? To reduce the gurgling of my dursos when I had them prior in the former tank, increasing the vent hole and placing a piece of 20 inch tubing helped with the gurgling and adjustments. Ball valve no good in durso for control, will make flood.
yes, LOL. I was fortunate enough to acquire the equipment at a super awesome closeout deal price display model in my previous job~ couldn't afford it if it wasn't; mostly bling, but does the job just fine.
