    Salifert Test Kits $uck!

Actually for normal use I'd say go with the API kH/Alk test instead of the LaMotte. It's a lot cheaper and the API works very well. BTW API uses Hach reagents so now you know why they are consistent. I also happen to think the API bottles are the best. It's easy to control the drops and they...

    Flatworms ! Mojamos ! Aptasia ! i had enough !

I recently "fixed" an aquarium similar to yours about a month ago. It was in pretty bad shape. It does take a while to do but is doable in a day. Here is what I did. I moved the corals out of the tank but left the fish & inverts. Dipped all corals in an Iodine dip/bath and FWE (dip/bath) and...

    Salifert Test Kits $uck!

I'm not a fan of Salifert test kits especially the alk kit. Way to many problems over the years with that kit. They are medium grade with high end price tags. For real good accuracy to cost here is what I use: LaMotte for Alkalinity & Calcium (or use Salifert strontium test kit for calcium)...

    Flatworms ! Mojamos ! Aptasia ! i had enough !

I'm sure you already know this but doing that is pretty drastic and you're going to basically start all over again. Let me ask this. Is the problem from worse to best; flatworms (are these red ones?), Aptasia then Mojanos? If not how would you describe the order? I'm not familiar with your...

    Best Prices On New Tank?

Make that Discount Aquariums on 73. Aquarium Center is in Clemington. Discount Aquariums is the cheapest place I've ever seen tanks. They sell cheaper then many stores buy at. Cheaper then ThatPetPlace too. Carlo

Anyone in my area drill tanks? Central NJ

I would think it depends on how you connect up to it. If you use threaded fittings then Teflon tape is what you would use. If you go with normal PVC and the bulkhead is ABS (many are) then I wouldn't use primer & sealent but all purpose cement (next to primer/sealant at Lowes/HD) for pipe work...

    Stock Tank

I wasn't suggesting not to do it, but just wanted to point out the viewing is different especialy if you have a lot of surface movement. Anyone who went down to Dr. Macs last month will understand the "ripple" comment. That said I've got a 150 and 300 stock tank (outside) and enjoy it but it's...

    Reef Alchemy - Randy Holmes-Farley

That about sums it up as far as things to test, watch & dose if needed. Reefkeeping.com has a lot of really good articles. Of course there are many articles there I wouldn't put a lot of faith in either. Generally anything by Randy is accurate and good. Carlo

    Stock Tank

Check out your local Agway store. Most have the 150s/300s and usually smaller ones in stock. The problem with using one as a fish tank is your ability to watch the fish. You're used to looking at them through the front of a tank and with the stock tank you only get a looking down view. Most...

Grape Calerpa within LR- Buy it or Pass?

Just me but I wouldn't put it in my tank. A separate tank with a few eaters for a while should do the trick. I'd then put the fish back in the tank and watch the rock for another 30 days just to make sure it's all gone. You don't want caulerpa in your tank! Carlo

Anyone in my area drill tanks? Central NJ

That makes sense Phyl. I use 1.5" & 2" holes which would be pretty hard to block plus I typically keep a small sponge in front of my holes to keep fuge macros in the fuge and not in the sump. Carlo

My Xenia, paly and GSP ain't looking right.

Close enough. Let's call it 8.3. That's a good number. Could be a tad higher but many will disagree with me and say that's a good number. I shoot for 8.5-8.6 during the day while others would say 8.4 during the day is good. Either way, we want to try and raise alk without touching the pH much...

Anyone in my area drill tanks? Central NJ

General section since it's not a DIY. Why the 2 holes? I'm not sure I follow the "protection" hole? If you're even close to needing a protection hole you have way to much flow in the fuge. :) You probably realize I hope that you should run all the tank water into the fuge unless you are using...

My Xenia, paly and GSP ain't looking right.

You're on the low side with 3.92 to 5.6 dKH. Do you have a buffer product on hand? Have any baking soda (not powder) or washing soda in the house? What is your current pH and how much water do you have in the tank? With that info we can get you back in shape. Carlo

You can order a diamond whole saw/bit for your drill off eBay. It's pretty easy to do. Wait is it a glass or acrylic sump? Carlo

    Your RO might be worthless

It can be cheaper then an RO/DI system but since you already have an RO/DI system really all you do is bypass the membrane and pick up a cartride of each or empty cartridges and bulk resin and use it that way. For home use the 10' canister is fine in size. If you go through the resin a little...

    Chemistry question - Alkalinity

I'm glad you enjoyed your drink last night. I on the other hand "shared" a beer with my tanks last night. I cracked open a cold Samuel Adams and went out to check the skimmer on the outdoor "pond". Leaned over to make an adjustment and went to take a drink only to realize I just poured the whole...

    Chemistry question - Alkalinity

Well lots of research/experiments by numerious universities, labs and experts in the field. Most elements are truly "trace" elements. If you never did a water change and only replace salt water due to the skimmer you should still have enough of "most" elements. There really are only a few...

    Chemistry question - Alkalinity

I'll just add that most people will never need to dose strontium unless you use Oceanic or Crystal Sea salts as they are low in the mix and only provide half the amount of this as other salts. I myself would not dose it unless you test for it first. You can get strontium test kits. Molybdenum is...
