Woke up to a full sump...

Cheap and reliable aren't usually synonymous, but I believe the Danner Mag drives are a pretty bullet proof pump.

    Nitrates!

I usually take a more holistic approach to these type of problems. There are many factors that can contribute to this problem, although one may be the overriding factor, you should address each one of them to insure that you have solved this problem. The use of "red slime removers" will...

    Advice on salinity and testers

I'm in Mt. Laurel, you're welcome to bring a sample here for testing/comparison. Are you using a 35ppt calibration solution? If you're using RO water, it may not be accurate a 35ppt, you should use a solution that will calibrate at the level of the sample you intend to test.

    Advice on salinity and testers

That's about a SG of 1.020. Since NSW is 1.024-1.026, I'd raise it and use the calibrated refractometer to measure it with. Keep in mind that along with a higher SG you will also get more Ca, Mg and Alk, so less dosing would be required. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php

Can't keep pH up and Algea has a death grip.

Low pH this time of year, with the house all closed up, is most often due to elevated levels of CO2 in the household atmosphere. At 7.8, I wouldn't worry about it, as long as your other param's are OK. I would stop using the buffer, since it is most likely raising your alk too.

    Testing help!!

You might want to check the procedure, the test reagent 'A' has be be mixed between each of the five drops, it's a bit of a PITA, but if you don't do it that way, your going to get bad readings. Here's a demo, if you haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MofaqM-I6uM
