I had a very similar experience with a pair of snowflakes I had. The larger eventually bullied the smaller right out of the tank. The first two times I heard it happen and put him back. Third time was not the charm, at least not for him.
My opinion would be just run it constantly or switch to WC's. if you could pull off a 1/2 gal change per day that would more then take care of things. Another though would be to pull the AC 500 and just use the skimmer. If your Aqua C have the surface skimmer box you could just add a small piece...
Weight.
The only thing that hold the AC 500 level is a small piece of plastic that will bend with just the weight of the filter. The added weight of the skimmer filled might through it over the edge. Plus the glass on a 10g is pretty darn thin.

Dan I dont know if you remember my corner pentagon tank but that was run with a HOB AquaClear 110. I used the filter sponge and a bag of carbon in it. As far as Im concerned it did a great job and I think anyone who saw that tank would agree.
