10 (depending on the brand/par) are better for growth, 14s better for color. The ultimate are the 6500s but only Merv can tolerate that much yellow over his tank ;D

The 10k spectrum is supposed to be better for growth (but we don't like the color of it) so we use that when we're typically not home. Then around the time we're arriving home from work we switch the tank over to the more appealing to us 14k spectrum, which is better for color. As for the "late...

I wouldn't bother trying to raise the PH through raising Alk, especially if your alk is already up over 10. You'll need to get the PH up naturally in that case. Who has plants in with their tanks? I wonder if that would help with the CO2...
