Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Lots of people use Brute containers to mix their water in with no ill effects (though precious few of us are using the PO4 meter you've got there so you're sort of in a class of your own). They may well be perfect for the cause.
The Brute trash cans aren't intended for potable water though...
What kind of rock would be leaching silicates? Is this something that will likely "burn off" or do you think it will continue to leach out of the rocks beyond normal "burn off" period?
I can understand your frustration. To go to such great lengths only to be faced with them anyway must be...
There's so much that goes into tuning your Ca reactor for your system (Your system's demand, the size of the reactor, two chambers or one... ) that I'm afraid there isn't an "easy answer" to your question. Here's a link to an arcicle that helped us quite a bit...
Raskilnikov sold some of those "back in the day" as well. You could check with him to see if he still had any around (though I'm sure if he did he'd be here peddling, lol).
I'm sure that salt bucket (along with the garbage cans typically used) isn't marked for potable water, Carlo. Fill a plastic container with water and a glass container. The TDS will be higher in the plastic container, even if both are tightly covered. I don't know why and I'm not sure what it is...
My pleasure, Mike. Good idea on the phosban reactor before the water change. Hmmm...
The big white 55g food grade drums we bought are perfect because I know they don't leach anything into the water. My topoff water sits in there and never goes up in TDS. I don't know where you can get food...
Ok then you know those numbers are spot on.
You could try testing fresh water that has sat in your mixing bucket for 12-24hrs and see if there's any noticable PO4 leaching in from your mixing container. Otherwise you know the bulk of it is your Reef Crystals.
Makes me want to go do another TM...
I test my tank in the evening when the kids are in bed, usually around 10pm. The parameters I'm testing (Ca, Alk, Mg) don't care what time it is. The PH will shift slightly based on your light schedule. Your Nitrate shouldn't shift by time of day either. I think testing when it is most...
Hard to tell if any live flesh is still inside of it or not. That would depend on what it looked like as it was "melting away". If it receded you have a shot, but if the flesh fell off you can write it off as dead. Better than even chance that it's gone. Sorry for your losses.
After our heater...
Next step (well first step really :) ) would be testing your source water. If that has it you know where it is coming from. If it *doesn't* have measurable PO4 then I'd check some SW mixed in a glass container. Certain plastic containers leach "TDS" into the water (water sitting in a...
I'd start with your RO/DI, move on to your mixed salt water, test the water from your food supply, your skimmer return, your phosban reactor return, fuge return...
Good luck finding the source!
We bring home grass shrimp for the tank all the time. We've also brought home some snails to feed the hawkfish & the wrasse. The up side is that the snails also seemed to like aptasia.
Our Harlequins also seem to like the starfish from the shore so we now have a freezer full of those as well...
