16 months might be a bit to long, I beieve every 12 months is better but will let others chime in .

Rich is right but none will do well if the system is not fully cycled first and water params are good . SPS will do much better in a matured tank with steady conditions . Post up some info on your system,equipt,size,age,water chemistry,,etc..

Just make sure that whatever you decide to add to the tank are not prone to weed like growth . Some mushrooms,kenya tree,xenia,etc. will quickly take over the smaller space . You will also be suprised how different zoa's will morph colors under the new lighting.

I would make up a batch of the new salt and check it against your tanks readings(cal,alk,ph,etc.) and adjust accordingly .

I've seen them in my tanks darker areas also, I wouldn't kill them there just another form of free filtration .

I think it will help you get a better answer if you add the following info . How long has it been in cycle mode ? Was rock pre-cured (how long)? from an established system ? Or un-cured? Same questions for sand . What type of filtration are you using during cycle ? Protein skimmer ? Flow ? How...
