Re: My Oceanic Tech 120 and a request for input.
Things are going pretty well. No major updates unless you want to see algae in my QT tank.
I will give one good pic that I took though.
Try to do weekly water changes. 10-20% is best.
Don't go for a HOB filter you have a decent skimmer. Fuge is nice because it is like adding some extra water volume plus some biological filtration. In addition the fuge lets you have an area to grow pods ect. Check out what you can find. There are...
Yeh the actual RODI units are a pain. They have adapters to hook up to your sink. Maybe buying the water at a LFS will be easier but then you still have containers for the water.
Koralias do have cords yes, Same as other powerheads only bigger, they are good on electricity though. Always give...
You cannot use the standard Koralia on a wave maker. They do sell a new version that you can....but...there is always a but...they are a lot more expensive. I have that wave maker with two MJ900 and two Koralia 4s in my 120. I like the results so far. Perhaps as a suggestion you could use a...
My fuge is set up like that with a Mag 12 ...the water flows pretty quick across the top but lower it is pretty stagnate...I am starting to get some pods growning now in the fuge at least. Cheato likes good flow by the way if you read up on it.
Welcome to the club...like everyone is saying join up and become a paying member.
I would say skip the filter. If you are using a hang on back skimmer and not drilling the tank you might however look into a hang on refugium...like a CPR or some others. This is an additional way to increase...
BTW I had one of those electronic Coralife thermometers...it totally crapped out and started reading a good 10 degrees too cool...thus 80 was reading at 68...I didn't realize it was the thermometer until I was doing doing my upgrade.
Koralia generally don't produce much heat, unless you have have a busted one. Could be either one or the other, my guess is you will have to use trial or error.
Yep just mix your salt like doing a water change and then test that water when it is up to 78 degrees before you do your water change. If the CA and MG are low then you either have the choice of getting new salt or supplementing your mix.(PS expect them to be low but you will see what Phyl is...
Ryan a big water change is not going hurt anything. Early on I had a major Phos problem...I ended up doing 10G(out of 24) water changes a couple times to really bring it down. PLEASE pay attention to temp and PH so they match though.
And as Phyl said use a better reef salt I know Trop always...
What he is saying is when you are doing your water changes you need to use salt fomulated for REEF tanks not just fish. The Reef mixes have more calcium and other minerals.
Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals are the same company I think just different mixes. Sort of like cheap gin and Bombay gin...
Hey Steve I was hoping someone would chime in. But I guess not. For my 120 which is 1200 SQ inches vs 900 for your cube I used 4X30lb dry sand 1X40lb live sand. So 160 lbs total sand. I also put my rocks down first and then sand so that displaced some sand.....giving me a deeper sandbed. I guess...
Welcome aboard. Become a member is great advice, also just be patient.
We will have some group buys early next year if you are a member so that should be helpful if you take your time.
