Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Wow, a super trekie. I’m willing to bet you were out in San Diego when my wife and I mistakenly scheduled a trip while Comic Con was going on in 2011. One night we had to wait an hour an a half to be seated for dinner……and that was only if we were willing to sit with a “single.” Well of...
Now I speak with the greatest of ignorance, but I would have a tendency to rip it back down as fast as it went up. Keeping it high can’t be helping. I think I’d be doing a good 50% water change and then fall back to doing smaller ones. Just an opinion of an ignorant person!
I...
Wow Mike, sorry to see this. Your best bet are water changes. High calc will do it too, but you start getting about 550 and you now have calc issues. Again, water changes.
In regard to the cause of the problem, I shall quote my father, who repeatedly said this to me over the years...
I know that some stains of bacteria grow quicker in the dark. I wasn't expecting these aerobic strains that we are trying to nurse to be one of them. But I guess it is.
Anyway, if you have THIS BRS reactor and it takes the same size canisters as THIS dual BRS reactor (which I would...
Looks like you have a nice plan.
The silicone you want is GE Silicone I (definitely not the II)
The one thing I’d change in your plan is to drill the tank and put in a Glass-Holes overflow kit. The kit comes with everything including the drill bit to drill the glass. My experience...
HEY, YOU'RE THE ONE WHO SUGGESTED DRAIN PIPE!
I’m still mulling that over in my head. I have nine-plus feet of drain pipe to work with. I’m thinking of a slip kind of window to check in on the pellets.
I’m also thinking that I don’t need to check them that frequently. So even...
Well here are your full tank shots. I wish I knew what I was doing with white balance. I tried two different white balances and it's still not close to what you see in person. You can't even see the purple cap, which jumps out at you. Oh'well.
With Jim telling me I’ve got to keep my biopellets in the dark, and Zippy suggesting drain pipe, I made a trip to HD and brought home ten feet of drain pipe. I went with the triple wall four inch pipe that has a black center portion and a white covering. It’s made of HDPE (high density...
When I use to make furniture, I use to get my stuff at Interstate Hardwood Lumber Co at 850 Flora St, Elizabeth, NJ 07201. There was also a place in Hightstown, but I can't remember the name. I've got to believe there are furniture grade lumber yards in the Trenton area.
Jon Warner (of Warner Marine and maker of EcoBak biopellets) gave an interesting and concise talk at this year’s swap. He said that the bacteria consume equal portions of nitrate, phosphate and carbon……a one for one for one. If one of the components isn’t there, it doesn’t work. That...
Matt, thanks for the heads up on your trash bin idea for blocking the light. I’ve got to kick around some ideas on how to block mine. I’m thinking more of a sleeve….but what material can take the saltwater?
Gee wiz, I sure hope it doesn’t overflow!
I get this all the time!
If you set up siphon breaks, sump flow-back is easily calculated. The sump was built to handle the back-flow:
Pumps On…note pink arrow (it might be purple…I’m color blind), marks water level in return...
So here’s my latest lame-brained idea…..get rid of my refugium! I’ve recently started biopellets which will now handle all my nitrates and phosphates….some say too well. So with nitrates and phosphates taken care of, why do I need a refugium filled with chaetomorpha. Actually my chaeto...
All the following are fresh cut/plucked….nothing mounted. You’ll leave with a generous piece. Pictures are of mother colonies. All are $5/each.
LARGE HAIRY MUSHROOM
I have maybe four or five of these. Whatever one we can get off the rocks. Here’s the Momma, about 6-7 inches...

Yep! Just make sure you add Alk to Alk and Calc to Calc......I've made that mistake once!
Both components are rock solid stable.....calcium chloride (the calc part) and sodium carbonate (the alk part).
