After John spends his portion "I'm buying a new Marineland Tank!" You’ll be limited to a fifth of Fleischmann’s vodka and a case of Milwaukee’s Best. ;D
Agree with Panman…A Home Depot 26 watt compact fluorescent is equivalent to 100 watts incandescent. I think I got the full spectrum one…not ones like “cool white,” or something similar.
If you're looking to maximize volume, I'd throw in a 40g sump/refugium right below the 40g DT. Similar to what I have...a 46g DT with a 45 g sump.
Or better yet, dump the 40g DT and make that a bigger tank...more volume...with an even larger sump below.
I certainly don't want to dissuade the...
The “Troyka” of a good refugium is Sand, Live Rock and Cheato (or some other plant material)
The three offer the medium to allow the biological actions of pods (and other inverts), bacteria and the wonders of photosynthesis to gobble up the wastes from the DT.
A 40 seems a little small for a sump in the basement unless you’re looking for that real clean look with nothing underneath.
Why not just drop a sump/refugium immediately below the tank? If you have overflow box issues (and it’s happened twice with me), by the time you get into the basement to...
Re: Jasonanatal's 120 gallon "Natural Simplicity" Reef Aquarium.
I think the biggest problem with the siphon line coming off the overflow is gunk clogging up the hole at the siphon line outflow. If you tee off this line, and the hole gets plugged up, you now have two Aqualifters sucking...
Paying for Corzine’s tax increases he announced today. Of course he didn’t call them tax increases, but when you cut education and local municipal incentives (like he’s saving us money), you know that your local taxes will certainly increase to make up the difference…he’s just passing the...
One of you are pro ballast-overdrive and the other is anti ballast-overdrive. I actually think this is a good argument over which is best. Although I’ve got a hunch that it’s not as simple as that. I think the bottom line is that you sacrifice ballast cost / energy consumption / bulb life for a...
As a newbie, I had no idea what I was looking at in the pictures above…I saw a ric in pic 1 and a powerhead, star polyp and coraline in pic 2. Simply put, I was confused…not very difficult to do.
Searching the net I found a pic of pineapple sponge and now everything is crystal clear. Now I see...
Jenn, you cannot post pictures directly. They must come from a host site. Heres the link that tells you how to post pics on NJRC. Note that you cannot use NJRCs Photo Gallery unless you are a member. I use Photobucket. Its free and easy to use...
If you haven’t done so already, you might wish to check out the DIY, tying into the basement:

In this particular build, they used a Sequence Pump. However, I haven’t looked up the spec’s, but I’m sure it pumps a...
Keep an eye on them. Look to see if it’s the variety that munches on coral.
As far as rapid growth, it seems that in some tanks they multiply like rabbits, while in others, they are rather slow growers. I have them and it’s not a problem. Every once in a while I’ll see maybe 4 or 5 and pluck...
Excuse the quasi highjack, but I think the answer to this could help here too:
Could someone explain ballast math? That is, the IceCap 430 states it supports 330 watts yet I’m told I can only run two 48” (54W) T5’s on that ballast. When I do the math, that’s only 108 watts. If it will run 330...
Doing a little fish cleaning and came across cichlid stuff I’m no longer using. I know some of us are wise enough to also raise freshwater fish ;D, so if you have cichlids, here’s your chance for some freebees.

To quote the website on info about Blue Tangs:
"It sounds silly, but this a fish that seems to break out with ich if you even look at it the wrong way."
You got ich!
