Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
@MaxDamage984 gets first dips but I have a tub of some old 'live' rocks that has been sitting in this tub for 7+ months now. These were the rocks from my first saltwater tank and when I upgraded I ordered all new rock (was going to run both tanks). I did take some of my old rock to add with...
Good meeting; I was impressed as a new member. I enjoyed my first meeting and look forward to more meetings. I just got my red dig mounted in my tank (won on the raffle) and I'm dipping the hammer that I got from @whitebear1020 and then will be mounting it.
Unfortunate I am still too new to say yes or no about your nitrates hurting your corals. I know my tank was reading nitrates around 50ppm for awhile and the corals I have didn't show any ill affects (that I am aware of). I had someone tell me once (again take it at face value cause I have not...
Also how do you have it set up? Do you have the GFO in the first chamber and the carbon in the last? Also is the GFO tumbling and the carbon not?
To answer your question you don't want to run it without the sponges cause the media will not remain in the chambers then.

Welcome to the club. I started in this hobby about 1.5 years ago with a 36g bow front. Now got a 54g corner (check out my story - My tank thread | NJ Reef Club ) You kid will love the tank. My two kids are always over by my tank watching my fish and corals. Congrats on the baby as well...
I use a water/white vinegar mixture. Not so the ratio (the wife makes it for cleaning other things). It does a good job on cleaning the glass and I seen no ill affect with my open top tank.
