External protein skimmer - 270 gallon - fowlr

Love the float switch! That's awesome! Never even considered something like that. Since I'm already using a 5 gallon bucket, I suppose I could just skip the smaller container and just use the bucket with the switch. Either way, great idea Paul! Thanks for sharing that!

    August 2012 meeting

Hey Don, you might want to check the link on the meeting sign up page. When you click the link to get to this thread, it doesn't actually bring you here, it takes you to "post a new thread" in the announcements forum.

Nano's are harder than I thought

I would say as long as they detect ammonia at all, they don't need to be accurate, since any ammonia is bad. Sent from my BlackBerry 8530 using Tapatalk

    Maroon Leg Hermit

It's a shame, he is cool. But he's also a one hermit hit squad on snails and other hermies, and he's a wrecking ball to coral frags! Lol! He'll do much better in a FOWLR tank. I think I even have some bigger shells he can take with him when he goes too. Sent from my BlackBerry 8530 using Tapatalk

    Maroon Leg Hermit

I got him by accident in a mixed lot of hermits a long time ago. He's a one-hermit-frag-bulldozing-snail-killing-pain in the butt. He's cool, but he wrecks everything he gets near, and is fond of plucking small frags off their perch. He was in my 30, got banished to the nano, now he's...

External protein skimmer - 270 gallon - fowlr

Depending on the location of the display tank (meaning, depending on whether he has the space for it, or is willing to let something unsightly to be seen), what I did was run a small tube from the bottom of the waste cup to a 5 gallon bucket on my hang on skimmer downstairs. Upstairs in the...

External protein skimmer - 270 gallon - fowlr

Looks to me like he is looking to replace the in sump skimmer with an external because he is concerned about the internal polluting the water. If it were me? I'd stick with an internal skimmer. The little bit that will get dumped back in the tank is of less concern to me than the water...

    Another accident story

I think I would consult an attorney regardless, even if you have no plans on suing anyone. An attorney will advise you of your rights (which, as shocking as it is to believe, insurance companies don't always stick to the letter of, especially if they think they can get away with it). It will...

GPH pump recommendation for a 300 gallon reef

If you are putting a fuge in your sump, you only want your return pump to be rated to handle the return of water through the DT's overflows. Your flow through your refugium should be slow and steady. Unless you are also hooking up a closed loop, you will handle the rest of your DT flow with...

mixing salt.. how much mixing is enough?

If you are storing it, you definitely want to keep it moving and heated to temp. And keep it covered to stop the evap. I usually keep mine moving with a power head just enough to keep the entire drum of water slowly circulating and aerated, and I keep the temp at the same temp the tank would...

    brown algae in sand

+1 to that. Not a fan of API's stuff as far as Saltwater goes. Definitely give the Chemipure a try, or Clear FX Pro if you can get ahold of that. But the diatoms won't go away with water changes. You have to just let the tank settle for a bit. Once they have run through the "food" source...

Looks awesome man! Those LEDs are really making those corals POP! Glad to see that you are seeing growth in addition to the other benefits of the LEDs. Looks fantastic!
