Your skimmer pump is 1100gph which would give you between 500-600 gph flow rate through the skimmer. The flow rate is usually about 50 to 60% of the pump rating if they are matched up well. So ideally you want a flow rate of 550gph to 660gph for the return pump.
Take a look at the specs on the...
I haven't seen Merv's tank yet but would bet they are Vortech pumps as Phyl mentioned. I almost hate to use more expensive pumps on an aggressive tank then on the reef tanks but I guess that's stupid thinking. The Vortech pump would actually be an ideal powerhead to use for this tank.
(just...
A pain no doubt but probably not as bad as it would have been for many people. I'm lucky enough to have the extra UV sterilizers to process the water so I didn't need to throw it out. With the other 600lbs of live rock in the central system I also didn't have to worry about the bacteria on this...
Try leaving the skimmer off for say 2 to 3 hours. Then after that kill your in tank circ pumps for 5 minutes to let the water settle. This won't affect the "film" at all but will make it much easier to see.
BTW, you can do this same trick another way. Just shut off all circulation including the...
I agree with Dave. :) Nothing wrong with a little "good" debate when there is good reasoning behind it. If nothing else, it makes you think or sometimes rethink your own setup which is never a bad thing to do. As long as it's friendly then there's no problem. No one is forcing anyone else to...
Tank was cleaned and a new sand bed put in. All except about 40-50 lbs of the rock has been put back in (still in oven) and she's full of water again.
Pretty much back to normal except it san's fish for 8 days.

No argument from me at all Dave on the 5x turnover rate if your equipment can handle it and you really want a lot of flow coming back from your sump. I myself wouldn't go 10x under any circumstance as it just isn't needed IMHO.
I 100% do think "most" companies are extremely optimistic in...
Ahh, the joys of QTing fish. I had a few new fish in QT including a Queen Trigger. I had a friend (also a reefer) helping me the other night and he told me the trigger wasn't looking very good (I knew he had ich and had purchased him at a discount that way) and asked me if he should move the...
Chris, how big is the room and what size dehumidifier to you currently have? Do you happen to know the relative humidity level in the basement?
It really sounds like the room is to big for the dehumidifier you currently have or there is just to much moisture (same thing really) there for your...
thetiler is in Oldwick (08889) and is selling rock for 2.50 per pound from his system he is taking down. http://www.njreefers.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=4093.0
Ed at In Living Color in Cherry Hill (club sponsor) has a sale on Fiji rock right now for $2.99 per pound...
If you're going to make it to the June meeting try and setup some frag purchases from fellow members as this will surely be cheaper then any store and you won't have any shipping charges like with mail order.

I'd sort of agree with the guy on RC that the 7 might degrade over time but the 18 is an overkill. Since you don't have the 7 yet why not go for a Mag 9? It's much closer to the 7 in performance then the 18 is but still has a little extra juice if needed.
BTW, if/when you reduce the pump size...
RonnieB1089, that sounds like a good match up when you take the head height into consideration and tube diameter used. If anything you mights still be returning a little too much as the skimmer will typically flow roughly about 1/2 the pump rating. But you're right in the right ballpark.
See...
Ed got exactly what I'm talking about.
What really got me thinking about slower turnover rates (for skimmers) was from working at Adventure Aquarium. On big tanks, it is just about impossible to reach one times turnover processing to clean the water with foam fractioning (protein skimming)...
I believe they are in a 6.3 million gallon tank. It's the same tank that houses:
giant groupers
Golden Trevally
Great Hammerhead Sharks
small and large stingrays
Largetooth Sawfish
The tank itself is 263' x 162' and 33' deep
While that might sound large it's nothing compared to real life for...
I consider them pests and removed them just as I would Aiptasia. These little suckers multiply/propagate quickly and become a pain in quick time.
I know it's hard to want to remove stuff from the tank when it's looking bare but do yourself a favor now and save the aggravation later on when you...
Yea DaveK I did mean under 1x. Told you it might be controversial. But read on for some additional clarification. :)
I was stressing the point that it's far better to 100% process the skim then get caught up in X turnover numbers.
I just grabbed a few flow rates from a few skimmers off the...
What about the bottom left corner? It just looks dark to me so I'm obviously missing something.

PS my vote is for fake (otherwise why would he ask) :)
Very very nice tank Chris. One of the nicest tanks I've seen pics of yet!
Carlo
PS It's nice to see someone else with a basement full of ozone, UV and reactors too. :)
