    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Well, when I had it in use the last time conditions were maybe not optimal. It was in the sump in the stand under my 90G, there was I guess a lot of dust and salt in the air, because the air filter-silencer thingy kept getting clogged. Even so, they really crank out the stinky skimmate! Setups...

Where in NJ to get a hedgehog?

Hey, did you ever get you hedghog?

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

I made provision for the baffles in my sump by siliconing in pieces of "sliding door track" from the HW store. The package looked really old, I bet the company has gone out of business! Don't ya love local hardware stores? It's basically a double-U-shaped styrene track. I will be able to vary my...

    NJ Acrylic Sump Builders

I'm making one out of a 40 breeder. I have drilled bulkheads for the return and skimmer pumps, and I'm siliconing in this plastic sliding door track stuff to hold my baffles. Way cheaper than an acrylic sump, if you can avoid breaking it ::).

    My DIY Kalk Reactor

Thanks, it looks great, I want to make one myself!

    My DIY Kalk Reactor

Yup. It must be really expensive to take out the whiteness. Hey -- I bet you would know the answer to this: If I want to put those John Guest fittings into my PVC pipe as shown above, can I do it by drilling and tapping? What size hole (and tap) would that be?

    My DIY Kalk Reactor

Gee, thanks, but I'm gonna use this, only $22 a foot, and it goes together with PVC cement: http://www.savko.com/partlist.asp?pgid=4&ptid=18&pid=18

    My DIY Kalk Reactor

I'm gonna do one too, using a magnetic stirrer to agitate the solution. Questions: 1) Is that 6" pipe and how long? 2) What is the red piece on the top called and where did you get it? 3) Is the thing on the bottom a toilet flange, or what is that thing and where did you buy it? Thanks!

Man, every idea is simple until you think about it.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

I like Glasscages. Their work is sturdy if not as beautiful as some of the high-end shops. I know of Glasscages tanks in use for 8+ years with no leaks. Most of the people who make snide comments about them have no firsthand knowledge of their tanks. They used to be more sloppy with the silicone...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

The sump is drilled for both pumps, bulkheads installed. I WILL be more careful. I am going to do the wet test and then add the baffles. Obviously I need to see how much drains out of the system when the power shuts down. I had a strange thought, buying a small tank (10 G and partly...

    PVC ?

British super-aquarist David Saxby showed his method for this at MACNA. He has a high end build-in-place reef tank business. What Phyl said is spot-on. He touted it as a way to save those expensive PVC fittings, like the $50 valve-unions.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Man, it took a long time to finish that 85MM hole...I think big holes take longer, you're actually making a much longer cut if you see at as linear instead of a circle. In the meantime I bought a fresh 45MM holesaw for the skimmer bulkhead, that one won't take very long to cut. While I was...

    Quiet system

I'm sure that would be fine. I've used various kinds of foam rubber, a lot of people use mouse pads.

    BB or SB

I really prefer the look of a sandbed but I am going BB in my new tank for a couple of reasons: 1) Want to have huge water flow to maximize SPS growth 2) I have been traumatized by flatworm infestation. The love DSBs, hate BBs and high water flow. 3) It simplifies maintenance. There's not LESS...

    Loctite super glue gel

Hanover Pet has a shelf of "reef-labled" super glue, huge bottles, and even solvent for unsticking the frags from your fingers. But I agree, I've used Loctite super glue, preferably the gel, to glue frags many times. I don't think it matters with super glue. Hey, I got a question: The scale...

    Spray Bar Holes

I'm gonna stick with the 1/4" holes, since there is agreement that clogging is an issue. I'm gonna drill it, build it and install it with (an undrilled) standpipe and fitting to connect to after I work out the rest of my tank-related issues.

    Spray Bar Holes

Yeah,m one of the things I thought about a siphon break was if it was big enough to bge reassuring, it was gonna push a mighty stream out that nobody wants and that steals backpressure. Damn physics anyway!

    Spray Bar Holes

This is going to be a 2-dimensional PVC support, that's its main job, just to keep the rocks off the bottom. I don't know if it needs a huge amount of flow, I just want to push the detritus out from under the rocks. Hey if I could figure a way to alternately suck and blow through the spray bar...
