If you're just starting to set this up, you can lay the tank on its side and pour some vinegar in it, allowing it to soak long enough for the coraline to soften, and wipe if off with a sponge.

You should consider "woods" as vegetation, the sw will kill it. As far as the pump is concerned, you could run fresh water through it after the saltwater, to flush it out.

If you have a 1" overflow BH and a 3/4" return BH (standards), the overflow will "safely" do 600 GPH, it can be pushed, but that is what's recommended. As far as your pump, any pump that will not exceed the 600 GPH after head loss should be fine. Here is a calculator you can use...
Is it a reef ready tank? Does it have an overflow chamber with the holes through the bottom of the tank?
Can you post a picture of the tank and current plumbing?
If it's an interior wall, I doubt there would be any insulation. I think what he's trying to say is, if you go through one side of the wall, and then go down, you won't be leaving any holes in the floor where you can see them, and patching up a hole in the drywall if/when needed, is much easier.
