We stuff a towel over the top of the overflow box and that dampens most of the noise. We don't push it in far enough to get wet, but rather just sit it in the top of the box.

Do you have a non-thumb piece of it? It is a little hard to tell by the size of the photo. My absolute guess based on the flouresence is a hydnophora, but I'd definitely need a bigger picture to be sure.
