Empty the collection cup and clean the inside and such every few months. That's about it in regards to skimmer maintenance.

I really have no idea myself since it'd be my first foray into it. I was just going to buy whatever came in the starter kits minus the Zeovit reactor and just use a TLF's Phosban reactor for it. It still confuses the hell out of me.

I don't think they pose much of a risk at all. The snapping is just to ward off the fish. Not meant to catch and kill them.
