Heres a link to the skimmer. It's about 25-26" high and will sit quite a bit higher than the rim of your tank.

I don't notice the noise on mine, but mine is not in a main living area, and theres a ton of other equipment running in the room.
I was referring more to having something that large hanging off of the back of a smaller tank. Might be kind of unsightly. If that doesn't bother you, my opinion is...
I run that exact skimmer on my 90 gallon, and have no issue with it. It's certainly not the most efficient skimmer in the world, but it does a pretty good job for me.
Question though, are you hanging that skimmer on your tank or planning a sump? That's a pretty big skimmer to hang on a 40 breeder.
Saw the guy at Ocean Aquarium feeding them rosies. If you only drop one or two small ones in at a time, he'll eat em faster than they'll die from the saltwater. Guess you would need some sort of small freshwater tank to hold them in though. Doesn't take much for them. I swear those things could...
Good plan. I have my eye on those pumps! Just can't make myself spend the money right now. Definitely on my "build list" for the 210 though, especially as big as that tank is!
That is one thing that Jake mentioned in his workshop. "Storming" the tank. Just not too much all at once if it isn't...
Odd.. Mine's a model citizen..
Anyway. Try the bottle trick.
Take like a 1 litre bottle, cut the top 1/3 of the bottle off, flip it so the cap opening is inside the remaining 2/3, drop some food down into the bottom, and weight it down in your tank.
Opening should be small enough for only the...
Good catch.
I have my skimmer positioned in a chamber in my sump that does not lose its water level.
Drain from tank to skimmer section, one single baffle, waterfall over to refugium, 3 baffel bubble trap that is positioned lower than the first baffle, to return pump chamber.
Thanks Nick. I think what I'm going to do is brace the interior and cut the front panel off then hinge that with locking hinges. So basically the entire front will open.
Can't wait to get this thing going!
Those numbers look like you are definitely cycling. Be patient. It will happen. Once your ammonia and nitrite are reading zero, you can begin water changes to bring the nitrates down.
As for skimmers, definitely take the advice not to skimp on those. next to lighting, it is probably the most...
+1 on the punt. What size is your tank? I've had really good luck with the corallife superskimmers over the years, and they are relatively inexpensive in the grand scheme of things. Just be sure to oversize whatever the recomendation on the model is.
Thanks, the picture really doesn't do it justice.
I'm excited about it, but taking it slowly. I really want to have the thing completely (or as completely as it ever can be) planned out before I start tackling setting it up. It's the biggest thing I've ever attempted that's for sure! Not to...
Not the best pic, but you get the idea. Needs to be cleaned, and you can see theres only about 2" between the canopy and the cieling. Thus the need to modify the canopy a bit.
Very good point on the heat. The canopy has some nice fans already mounted in it (thanks anthony and terry! LOL!)
I was considering trying to mount the lights on some sort of movable shelf, kind of like a keyboard shelf type thing, so that I could slide them in and out for easier maintenance...
